Summary 1st Muharram marks the beginning of Islamic calendar

KARACHI (Dunya News) – The moon of the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar has been sighted and the Youm-e-Ashura will be on October 24, Dunya News reported.

According to details, the central Ruet-e-Hilal committee met under supervision of chairman Mufti Munibur Rehman at Metrological office in Karachi in which the final announcement was made in light of the moon sighting testimonies received.

The first Muharram will be on Thursday October 15 while the Youm-e-Ashur will be on October 24. Other then members of the committee, the session was also attended by Director General (DG) Religious Affairs Noorul Islam Shah, Director Metrological Abdul Rasheed and representatives of Suparco and Karachi University.

The committee members and other participants viewed the moon during the session and the announcement was made after their testimony.

1st Muharram marks the beginning of Islamic calendar and this month has historic and religious significance as the first ten days are when the events of Karbala took place hundreds of years ago.

Muslims across the world remember the martyrdom offered by grandchildren of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who refused to bow before oppression and tyranny in an imposed battle of ultimate betrayal.

Muslims hold special processions, prayers and gatherings to remember how the refusal to bow before tyranny by grandchildren most beloved for the Prophet (PBUH) saved the religion of Islam as we know it today.

The federal government on Tuesday has approved the request of provinces regarding deployment of army in sensitive areas during Muharram-ul-Haram.

All the four provinces wrote a letter to federation, demanding army personnel’s deployment in order to meet any untoward situation during the holy month.

More than 12,000 army soldiers would be appointed in various parts of the country as a quick response force.

The authorities would ensure the security of highly-sensitive areas in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, Multan, Gujranwal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Hangu, Bannu, Kohat, D.I Khan and Chakwal.

On the other hand, the district administration of Quetta has banned pillion riding by imposing Section-144 in an attempt to maintain law and order during Muharram 7 to 10.
