(Web Desk) – Several bridges of Pakistan Railways (PR) have reached their end of life. The bridge that fell at Gujranwala was also 105-year-old, reported Dunya News.

Several of the bridges and infrastructure of PR has been around since the time of British rule. 13,841 small and large bridges are being used by PR while 55% of the bridges have finished their life span.

1352 bridges are between 100-120 years old while 1245 bridges are 80-100 years old. 640 bridges are 60-80 years old as well.

The bridge that fell near Gujranawala was also more than a hundred years old.

In 2007, a plan was formulated to repair 159 extremely fragile bridges yet the plan has not materialized for the past 8 years.

Several irregularities were done in the name of ‘repair work’ in the previous government. Several scandals also emerged as use of second-grade material emerged as well but no investigation has been conducted.
