Summary Great warrior of subcontinent was among the last to fall in the Southern India against British

LAHORE: (Web Desk) – On his 216th death anniversary, one of the greatest warriors of subcontinent Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Tipu was given a rich tribute by the Twitterati as they trended #TipuSultanTheHero on Monday in both India and Pakistan. While many would argue whether he was a Muslim hero or the hero of all the communities living in the united India, one thing is for sure that he was a hero who stood fast before the mighty British army at a time when there was hardly any serious opposition left before the imperialist power in India.

Born in 1750 in a period of great turbulence in India, Tipu Sultan was son of the great Sultan Haider Ali Khan of Mysore. He was among the last few kings of the Southern India that stood before the British. According to Roddam Narasimha, Tipu’s military manual ‘Fathul Mujahideen’ was considered a pioneer in the use of rocket artillery. He got his army trained by the French under an alliance with Napoleon Bonaparte. While he fought Marathas on one hand and the British on the other, Nizam of Hyderabad were also extremely hostile as they feared that they would lose their states to Tipu Sultan if he wasn t defeated by the British.

Although Tipu was steadfast and his war tactics were still unbeatable yet some traitors within his ranks allowed the British to enter his fort and on 4th of May, 1799, the great ‘Tiger of Mysore’ fell with a sword still in his hand. Mir Sadiq, Tipu s prime minister and the traitor who conspired with the British to defeat him, is chastised to date for his treachery.

He certainly was one of the few true bravehearts that stood before the British to defend his homeland.

It may be argued that Tipu Sultan was a leader of United India and all communities living in his kingdom were equally well-treated but there are some who believe him to be a Muslim-only hero since he was a Muslim first and thus one of the founders of Pakistan.

similarly, some said that he was a hope for the Muslims of the subcontinent.

There were Indians as well, arguing that India has an exclusive right over celebrating Tipu Sultan as its hero.

Young Guns of India believed that he was one of the true Indian heroes; a great Muslim hero of the United India.

But this shows that Tipu was a hero for everyone. And this where lies his greatness; in being a hero of the entire subcontinent.

But this is also true that only Twitter seemed really celebrating the hero from Mysore. There was nothing seen on the TV channels or anywhere in the country on the 216th death anniversary of the great ruler.

He was a warrior that was feared by the British. Even today, British museum keeps a sculpture, made personally by Tipu Sultan, that shows a lion, depicting Tipu, preying over his British enemy.

Residents of both the countries pray today to have leaders like Tipu Sultan who would stand up against the imperial powers for national interests, laying even their lives for their nation.

On May 4, 1799, Tipu Sultan died. After 216 years of his death, the great warrior still commands massive respect from people of both the countries.

He rests peacefully in Srirangapatna today. As he himself had said, "The real joy of life is to combat difficulties and miseries with firm determination.
