JOINT SESSION OF PARLIAMENT UNDERWAY

The joint sitting of Parliament has resumed debate on Yemen conflict to evolve a consensus strategy on the matter.

Addressing the parliament, Mohsin Khan Leghari said relentless efforts should be made to bring an end to conflict in Yemen. He said the matter should be resolved on the table of negotiations and Pakistan should play neutral role in the Middle East conflict in accordance with the contours of our foreign policy.

Given the situation on our borders, it will not be a wise decision to send troops to Saudi Arabia, Leghari added.

He appreciated the services of Pakistan Navy and the PIA for the safe evacuation of stranded Pakistanis from Yemen.

Ayaz Soomro said that Pakistan has always played a leadership role in Muslim Ummah. He said Pakistan can play the role of mediator in the current Middle East crisis. The Prime Minister and the Ministers should visit different Muslim countries in order to defuse the tension in the Middle East.

Since Monday, the lawmakers have been discussing Saudi Arabia’s request to join the coalition. Saudi Arabia has asked Pakistan for military aircraft, warships and soldiers.

In the face of the two countries’ strong alliance, the joint session of parliament has overwhelmingly rejected the idea of military intervention in Yemen, with lawmakers saying they do not see the impoverished Arab Peninsula nation as a threat to the integrity of Saudi Arabia. Some said that events in Yemen could further inflame sectarian tensions in the Muslim world.
