Pakistan should play role of meditator not gladiator in Yemen, say analysts

LAHORE (Web Desk) -- Foreign affairs specialists have said that the ongoing war in Yemen is not of sectarian nature and instead of going in a military role, Pakistan should play the role of a mediator instead, reported Dunya News on Thursday.

Analysts have said that such a move would allow Pakistan to remain in good terms with Saudi Arabia, which is home to 30 lac Pakistani expatriates.

Former Foreign Minister Mian Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri said that Saudi Arabia along with China had helped Pakistan in 1971 war and did not accept Bangladesh as a state at that time as well.

He said that Pakistan should not send forces to Yemen and the crisis should be dealt in coordination with Turkey to work out a solution.

Mian Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri said that the military and political leadership are on the same page on the matter.

Renowned journalist and analyst Ahmed Rashid reiterated his stance that Yemen was not a sectarian war but a civil one.

He dismissed Saudi Arabia’s claim that it is threatened by presence of Houthi’s rebels and said that it is in fact Houthis which have been victimized by 6 wars.

Secretary South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) Imtiaz Alam said Pakistan has practically become a partner of Saudi-led allocation as Saudi Army’s Brigadier General Asiri had been displaying the flag of Pakistan in every press conference.

He warned of dire consequences in terms of backlash for Saudi Arabia if the current situation continued.
