KABUL (Web Desk) - Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has welcomed Pakistan s latest efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
Ashraf Ghani in a statement in Kabul said Pakistan s cooperation for peace and stability in Afghanistan is sign of improving ties between the two nations.
He said Afghanistan appreciates Pakistan s recent efforts in paving the ground for peace and reconciliation.
“Understanding the common threats and challenges, Afghan and Pakistani leaders have recently come to the conclusion to undertake joint efforts and cooperation for counter-terrorism. The heinous terrorist attack in Yahya Khel of Paktika and the attack on innocent school children in Peshawar have strengthened the resolve of the leadership of the two countries to make joint efforts in fight against terrorism and extremism in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the Afghan Presidency stated in a press release.
Afghan President’s remarks came two days after US Secretary of State John Kerry praised the efforts of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief General Raheel Sharif in improving ties with war-torn Afghanistan.
"In the transition taking place in Afghanistan, we are witnessing an unprecedented level of effort to try to produce cooperation. And thus far, there are some signs of real results with respect to that," Kerry said in a joint press conference with visiting Pakistan Interior Minister Nishar Ali Khan on Thursday.
"We are grateful for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif s commitment to this, for General Raheel s efforts. They ve been real. The two Pakistani leaders are committed to going after terrorists, all forms of extremism in Pakistan," he said.
He said both are committed to the evolution of their own democracy, to the strengthening of it, and to trying to be a partner in the region for peace and stability of the region.
