ISLAMABAD: (Dunya News) – Citizens of Karachi are faced with yet another problem as the federal government has categorically stated that it will not be providing 650 mega watts of electricity to K-Electric from now on. Federal government has told K-Electric to run its plants up to its capacity as it will not be giving 650MW electricity to Karachi from national grid, reported Dunya News.

Federal government has said that it will be providing this electricity to other parts of the country. Secretary Water and Power Younas Dahga briefed the standing committee of the National Assembly regarding the decision on Tuesday. He told that NEPRA and NTDC have also been informed of the decision. He said that the K-Electric has the capacity to produce 2,500MW electricity from its plants and should produce up to its capacity.

K-Electric spokesperson responded to this decision by saying that the case of 650MW electricity is pending in Sindh High Court and the federal government will be committing contempt of court if it stopped the supply.

Responding to the statement by K-Electric spokesperson, NTDC spokesperson said that the agreement between the NTDC and K-Electric has expired and there was no chance of contempt of court after the termination of the agreement. He said that Karachi’s requirement is 1700MW while K-Electric’s production capacity is 2000MW.

Sidnh Assembly was also abuzz with the complications between federation and K-Electric. Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Syed Khalid Ahmed presented the resolution which was adopted by the house. According to the resolution, Sindh government also wrote a letter to the federal government asking it to fulfill the agreement. MQM leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan demanded that the supply of 650MW to K-Electric should not be stopped. He said that the agreement to provide 650MW electricity to K-Electric from national grid was signed during Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) tenure.
