Lawyers observe strike against publication of offensive caricatures

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News)— Lawyers across the country observed a strike on Monday against the publication of offensive caricatures by a satirical magazine in Paris, France. The lawyers boycotted courts and hearing of several cases remained pending. Massive protest rallies are also being held in parts of the country.

The call for the strike has been given by the Pakistan Bar Council. Following the call, the lawyers boycotted Islamabad High Court and district courts. Moreover, the lawyers from Rawalpindi also didn’t turn to the courts in protest against the blasphemous caricatures.

Meanwhile, the courts in Karachi also remained deserted and the many pending cases couldn’t be heard. The lawyers stayed away from the hearings of cases in High Court, city courts and district courts.

Protest rallies against the caricatures were also held in Lahore in response to the call by Pakistan Bar Council. At the same time, the lawyers from Peshawar also took to streets to register their protest.

The protesting lawyers in Quetta boycotted courts and hence, the judicial work came to a standstill with no lawyer appearing in any matter due to the strike.

Moreover, the legal fraternity from several cities including Multan, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Bahawalnagar held demonstrations to condemn the publications.

They lawyers were protesting against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo which was attacked by gunmen on January 7 for publishing cartoons deemed offensive to Muslims.
