ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Saturday has approved as many as three different surcharges to be added in the electricity bills. Earlier, these surcharges were imposed for a limited period of time.
According to the details, Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting which gave approval to at least three different surcharges to be added in the customers’ electricity bills. These surcharges are of Rs 0.6, Rs 0.3 and Rs 1.5 per unit each.
According to the sources, the meeting has made a part of the tariff to these surcharges to escape legal proceedings in courts. The committee would forward an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in this regard. Earlier, these surcharges were made a part of the electricity bills for a limited period of time.
Moreover according to the sources, the government has decided to have the electricity customers pay for technical losses of electricity for which ECC has given a go ahead to NEPRA to issue policy guideline. An analytical study would be done of the technical losses in accordance with the policy guideline. These losses would be received from the people in form of electricity bills.
However, NEPRA has already refused to take 18 percent of the technical losses from the customers in wake of the verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan. NEPRA is willing to receive only 13 percent of the technical losses from the people whereas Finance Ministry has a difference of opinion on the matter as it wants to charge 18 percent of the losses to the electricity customers.
