Summary So far, around 2800 polio workers have administered polio drops to 90% children in Faisalabad.

FAISALABAD (Web Desk) – The district administration has extended anti-polio campaign for two days in Faisalabad, Dunya News reported on Thursday.

The three-day campaign was affected following killing of a polio worker and opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s anti-government protest, due to which target of vaccinating 1.3 million children below age of five years could not be achieved.

The local administration has now decided to resume the anti-polio drive till December 12 to administer polio drops to remaining ten percent children.

POLIO WORKER’S KILLING

Muhammad Sarfaraz, 40, was giving polio vaccination drops to children on Tuesday in the eastern city of Faisalabad when he was shot dead by two unidentified assailants.

According to health officials, the militants  attacks have made it extremely difficult for health workers to run their campaign. They say that a failure of the polio eradication drive would be devastating for the country and its already weak economy.

Pakistan is one of the three countries in the world, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria, where polio remains endemic.

According to the country s health officials, the number of polio cases detected in Pakistan so far this year stands at 202. This is the highest figure in 15 years exceeding the previous record of 199 infections in 2001.
