KARACHI: (Dunya News) – In view of the reduction in petroleum prices by the federal government, Sindh government has decided to reduce the public transport fares in Karachi by 1 rupee. The provincial government has also banned the chingchi rikshaws on important highways and announced a crackdown against 9 – 12-seater chingchi rikshaws.
Minister of Transportation presided over a meeting today (Thursday) that was attended by Karachi Transporters Union officials. It was decided in this meeting that public transport fares will be reduced by 6-7 percent. Bus fares have also been reduced by 1 rupee in view of this decision. According to the notification issued by the government, the new fare rates will be implemented from Friday.
According to transporters, the minimum fare will continue to be Rs. 10 but the fares will be reduced on second and third stages of the route. Citizens have termed 1 rupee reduction in the fares as ‘quite ordinary’. Not only did the citizens term the cut on fares quite nominal, they also demanded alternate transport facilities on the routes where chingchis are being banned.
