Summary Resolution of the matter of CEC appointment is my priority, says Shah

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): The Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah has said that three names have been discussed with Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif for the post of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan.

He expressed these views in a press conference after his meeting with the PM on Thursday.

He said that in the meeting, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) suggested Justice Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui as the CEC but Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) did not agree with the PML-N’s suggestion. While the PPP suggested Justice Ajmal Mian for the post but the PML-N refused to agree.

Khurshid Shah said that the name, Justice (r) Rana Bhagwandas also came under discussion but he has refused to be appointed as CEC.

He said that resolution of this matter was his priority and that he would also meet the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Aftab Sherpao and the parliament members of other political parties to resolve it.

Meanwhile, the PTI has suggested Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid for the CEC post. According to Qureshi, Khurshid Shah has contacted him to resolve the matter.

The government is also confused over the appointment of the Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan. The government has not responded to the ECP after being contacted to resolve the matter.

When incumbent CEC, Ishtiaq Ahmed, leaves, after second extension in his service, the post will be vacant.
Shah said that the government was asked for three names from the District Management Group (DMG) or Secretarait group, which until the filing of this report, have not been given.
