KARACHI (Dunya News) – Dunya News has obtained the copy of Sindh Local Government Amendment Bill 2014. According to the Amendment Bill, the power of delimitation of electoral districts and voting areas would be transferred from provincial government to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to enable it to carry out delimitation work for local body elections in Sindh.
The Sindh Local Government Amendment Bill would be tabled in the Sindh Assembly session today (Monday). Dunya News has obtained the copy of the Amendment Bill. According to the amendments made to the Sindh Local Government Bill, the authority of delimitation of electoral units would be transferred from the government to the Election Commission.
Union Committee, Muncipal Committee, Town Committee and Muncipal Corporation would be responsible for carrying out the delimitations process.
The Returning Officers (ROs) will collect the nomination papers for reserve seats for women, non-Muslims, laborers and farmers in the set time.
According to another amendment made to the Sindh Local Government Bill, name of Union Council- the basic unit of the local government election- has been changed to Union Committee.
Considering the strenuous relations between the Pakistan People’s Party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the amended bill is likely to raise a heated debate in the Sindh Assembly.
