Punjab govt forms 3-member committee to probe Multan stampede

Summary PTI had organised the big anti-government public meeting at the local cricket stadium.

MULTAN (Web Desk) – Punjab government on Saturday constituted a three-member committee to probe Multan stampede that claimed lives of seven people and injured more than 40, Dunya News reported.

The stampede occurred on October 10 at the end of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf rally rally organized by cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan at Ibne Qasim Bagh Stadium in the northeastern Multan city. Reportedly, the commotion started when power supply went off and rally participants rushed towards the exit gates.

The committee headed by Secretary Environment Iqbal Chohan comprises Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Amir and Special Home Secretary Dr Shoaib Akbar.

Meanwhile, police have finalized the initial report into the incident and forwarded to the Inspector General of Punjab police.

According to report, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was responsible for all the arrangements at rally venue.

More than two thousand policemen were deployed at the venue and five gates of the stadium were open when stampede occurred. The report further stated that police shifted the injured to hospitals in their vehicles.

On the other hand, CPO Multan Sultan Gujjar stated that IG Punjab has only been apprised about the incident no reason has been given yet. Inquiry of the incident will be carried out by the appointed committee. Afterwards, a case will be registered against those responsible for the incident.

According to the police, between 25,000 and 30000 people had attended the rally.
