ISLAMABAD: (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) rebellious president Makhdoom Javed Hashmi’s resignation has been accepted by Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq today (Thursday). Javed Hashmi had announced during his speech on September 2, 2014, that he wanted to resign from his seat in National Assembly.

Javed Hahsmi had won the election in NA – 149, Multan, during the General Elections 2013 on PTI ticket. Hashmi had developed some differences with the party chairman Imran Khan on the issue of the ongoing sit-ins in Islamabad. On August 29, Javed Hashmi held a press conference in Multan and alleged Imran Khan of holding the long march on the directions of certain quarters in the establishment. Responding to the allegation, Imran Khan announced from his container the very same evening that he had parted ways with Javed Hashmi forever.

2 days later, on September 1, Javed Hashmi held yet another press conference in Islamabad and revealed more about the intra-party discussions with Imran Khan. He said that Imran Khan was working on an ‘agenda’. “Imran Khan told us that we cannot move without Army”, Javed Hashmi said. He also told that there were serious concerns within the party about moving from D-Chowk towards Prime Minister House for agitation but Imran Khan, instead of following the advice by core committee, decided to move forward.

Javed Hashmi’s revelations stirred up a serious controversy throughout the country. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had to issue a clarification that the Army was not behind these sit-ins. ISPR also said that the army was a non-political institution.

On September 2, 2014, Javed Hashmi made a final appearance in the National Assembly where he made a fiery speech. He heavily criticized the government for its incompetence and ineptness in controlling the inflation. He said that if the government did not try to mend its ways, the parliament will always remain under threat from outside.

At the end of his speech, Javed Hashmi said that none of the PTI members had tendered their resignations happily. He said, “Respectable Speaker! You said you wanted to confirm if the PTI members had resigned by themselves or were forced to resign. I tell you today as the President of PTI that none of the members had resigned on his/her will. But today, I assure you that I am resigning from my seat and will go back to my people now”.

Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq accepted Hashmi’s resignation today and his name was removed from the NA website. It is pertinent to mention that PTI members had tendered their resignations on August 22. However, none of the resignations have yet been accepted other than Javed Hashmi’s. On a question by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Maulana Fazalur Rehman, Speaker National Assembly told that he wanted to confirm from PTI members whether their resignations were submitted on their will or they were forced to resign.
