Musharraf treason case: Prominent witness Deputy Solicitor testifies

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The hearing of high treason case against former president Pervez Musharraf continued on Tuesday. A prominent witness of the case Deputy Solicitor of Law Ministry, Taj Umer testified, Dunya News reported.
The three-member bench presided over by Justice Faisal Arab heard the case. Law ministry’s Deputy Solicitor appeared before court and recorded his testimony. He also presented 19 important documents including orders to stop all judges including former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry from working. The documents also included affidavits of new judges along with the evidence documenting orders to impose emergency rule on December 14, 2007.

Previously the high treason hearing was held on June 13th. Musharraf Attorney Farogh Nasim said the Former President has consulted the Cabinet and also send the copies to Prime Minster of that time Shukat Aziz.
The defense lawyers also said that Musharraf lifted the emergency on 15 Dec as the President rather than Army chief.
This stated that he has implemented the emergency as president. He further said that the order by which the treason case is put up, should include all the parties which supported that act at that time.
Moreover, previously the FIA probe report regarding the high treason case against former President Pervez Musharraf was submitted before the jury by Prosecutor Akram Sheikh.
It is to be noted that Musharraf had been accused of treason under Article 6 for suspending, subverting and abrogating the Constitution, imposing an emergency in the country in November 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.
Multiple times former military ruler has rejected all the charges leveled against him.
Barrister Farogh Naseem was appointed as the new counsel of the former president Pervez Musharraf after a team of counsels defending Pervez Musharraf in treason case boycotted the proceedings of the special court.
Pervez Musharraf was shifted to ICU after his blood pressure shot up, a day before he was expected to appear before the Special Court in the high treason case. It is to be noted that due to his health issue, many times he was not able to appear in special court.
Previously, he pleaded not guilty and has always claimed that the charges against him are politically motivated. According to the media pundits, he could have been faced the death penalty if convicted.
Musharraf has claimed he still has significant support from the army, and many analysts still believe a way will be found to spare his life and send him back into exile abroad.
