LAHORE (Dunya News) - India on Friday released nine Pakistani nationals including five fishermen detained in the Indian jails, Dunya News reported. The Indian authorities handed over the released prisoners to Pakistani authorities on Wagha Border.
The released Pakistanis said they have been facing a terrible situation during detention in Indian jails. They appealed to the government to take steps for the release of other Pakistanis detained in India.
Earlier on May 30, India also released 37 Pakistani prisoners.
It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan released 151 Indian prisoners on May 26, as a goodwill gesture on the direction of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Currently, 477 Pakistani prisoners still remain lodged in Indian jails. Of them, 22 civil prisoners have completed sentence and await repatriation while 296 Indian nationals including 249 fishermen are detained in Pakistan.
Pakistan has always stated that the issue of prisoners is a humanitarian one and should be taken in same spirit.
In a statement, Foreign Office has expressed the hope that the Government of India would release all Pakistani prisoners, who have completed their sentence.
