WASHINGTON (Web Desk) –State Department Deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf has said that the United States is closely moniroty the situation of displaced persons in Pakistan.
“We do understand that the Government of Pakistan is working with the appropriate international and donor organizations to ensure that assistance is in place for displaced peoples and their families. The USG is a major contributor to such organization – organizations, excuse me, and we stand ready to assist the IDPs in any way we can,” she stated during a press briefing on Friday.
Marie Harf said the US has long supported Pakistani efforts to extend writ of the government throughout the country and to increase internal stability.
To a question, she said “we are working with the Government of Pakistan not just on security issues like our shared counterterrorism interests but also on education and economic issues and energy issues. We work together on a whole host of topics.”
The spokesperson said Pakistan is facing many challenges and US authorities are committed to work with them.
Over half a million people in Pakistan have been displaced due to ongoing military operation against terrorists in North Waziristan tribal region.
According to UN, the displaced people include more than 11,000 families with many escaping to neighboring cities like Bannu, and tens of thousands of people crossing over to Afghanistan s border provinces.
Pak Army began the operation (Zarb-e-Azb) against militant hideouts in the volatile tribal region on June 15. The operation came following a raid by the pro-Taliban militants on Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on June 8, in which 37 people were killed. On June 9, the militants also carried out another attack on a training center outside the airport in Karachi.
