Foreign assets case: Notices issued through newspaper to 60 politicians

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Notice through newspaper advertisement has been issued to 60 Pakistani politicians on the order of Lahore High Court (LHC).

Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan of LHC had ordered to serve notices to the politicians in foreign assets case but some excused from receiving the notices or while others said they have no information about any notice after which the names of the politicians have been advertised in the newspaper to receive the notice.

The politicians whose names have been published in the newspaper include Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf, PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad, PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PTI leader Javed Hashmi, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Former Speaker NA Fehmida Mirza, Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and others.

Meanwhile, names of former bureaucrats and former Chief Justice of Lahore High Court have also been published in the newspaper advertisement.

The politicians have been directed through the newspaper advertisement to repond to the court order until June 20 otherwise the court will continue further proceeding in this regard.

It is to mention here that Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan of Lahore High Court summoned 26 politicians on May 20 over plea filed by Barrister Iqbal Jafary regarding politicians assets abroad.

It was prayed in the plea that the prominent politicians including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, ex-president Asif Ali Zardari and others have assets abroad while the country is reeling under untold burden of debt.

The court was told that Nawaz Sharif, Kulsoom Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz did not receive court notices while ex-prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has received it.

The court ordered that notices against the respondents would be published in national newspapers if they fail to appear before the court. The hearing was adjourned till June 16.

The petition was filed in 1996 by a lawyer Javed Iqbal Jafri against 26 politicians but later more names were added to it.

The petition stated that the respondent politicians had transferred at least $300 billion to foreign countries through money laundering, causing a huge loss to the national exchequer.

The petitioner pleaded to the court to order the politicians to bring back their assets for the national interest.
