Chief Justice of Pakistan takes notice of Lahore 'honour killing'

Summary The woman was beaten to death with bricks by her family outside Lahore High Court.

(Web Desk) - The Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani on Friday took notice of the murder of a young woman outside Lahore High Court (LHC).

The notice was taken on a report published in media on May 29 containing the details that the murder of a young woman, who was beaten to death with bricks by her family for marrying without their consent.

It was further requested to the Supreme Court that the killers be brought to justice and the police officers who were silent bystanders be punished for their inaction, to dispense justice to victim.

The CJ also sought a report from Inspector General Police (IGP), Punjab within 48 hours.  

Victim Farzana Parveen was arriving at court to testify in her husband Iqbal's defence after he was accused by her relatives of kidnapping her and forcing her into marriage.

Iqbal, a farmer, said Parveen's family initially agreed to their marriage before turning against it because they were unhappy with the dowry he offered.

Last year, 869 women died in so-called "honour killings", according to the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
