Illegal SIMs should be blocked, orders SC

Summary PTA chief says activating more than two SIMs on one mobile or IMEI number will not be allowed.

KARACHI (Web Desk) - Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered that a task force comprising representatives from cellular companies, police, IB, FIA, ISI, MI and FBR be constituted under Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) chairman to block illegal mobile phone SIMs.

A 5-member bench of SC headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry issued these orders during the course of hearing of implementation of court’s decision in Karachi violence case here in Karachi registry Friday.

Chairman PTA Ismail Shah gave presentation to SC during the course of hearing on blocking illegal SIMS on multi media.

Shah said that activating more than two SIMs on one mobile or IMEI number will not be allowed in one day. More than five SIMs will not be allowed to be activated on one national identity card. In first phase service providers will identify the customers holding more than 10 SIMs. Importing mobile phone without IMEI number will not be allowed.

Cooperation from customs authorities is needed to curb import of mobile phones without IMEI numbers, he said. He further said final recommendations will be evolved till December, 17.

The court ordered that task force should work out final recommendations till December, 17 and present report thereof to it.

CJP remarked “task force report will be reviewed again during next hearing after three weeks. He inquired the machines by means of which non operational SIMs are activated have come from where and how.

Chairman PTA said these machines have been recovered from illegal service providers and Karachi police chief IG Shahid Hayat has recovered 20 such machines during targeted operation.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned for 3 weeks.
