Summary Three day Commonwealth Summit has opened in the Sri Lankan Capital Colombo.
COLOMBO (Web News) Inaugurating the summit‚ Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa called for greater collaboration among the member countries of commonwealth to face the socio economic challenges.
He said special emphasis should be given to the eradication of poverty and hunger and ensuring access of the people to basic amenities of life including health and education.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif is representing Pakistan in the 23rd summit‚ which is being attended by heads and representatives of fifty three member countries.
On the sidelines of the Summit‚ the Prime Minister will also hold meetings with his Sri Lankan‚ Australian and New Zealand's counterparts and other leaders to promote bilateral relations.
Pakistan is one of the eight founding members of the Commonwealth which signed the London Declaration in 1949.
Pakistan makes annual contributions to Commonwealth Secretariat ‚ Commonwealth Foundation‚ Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation‚ Commonwealth Youth Programme and the Commonwealth of Learning.
Meanwhile‚ Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has congratulated the government and people of Sri Lanka for hosting important Commonwealth Summit in their country.
In his special message on the occasion of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting‚ he expressed confidence that Commonwealth would become a stronger and more cohesive organization under the leadership of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that Pakistan subscribes to the work of the Commonwealth for promoting peace through international co-operation‚ poverty alleviation and sustainable economic and social development.
