Mobile service to remain suspended in Lahore till 10th Muharram evening

Summary Services have been restored in Karachi and other cities of the country after about 14-hour closure.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – It has been decided to remain cellular service suspended in Lahore till 10th Muharram evening to avert any untoward incident.

According to sources, the decision to suspend cellular service has been taken to protect gatherings and processions being held in connection with Yaum-e-Ashur.

Earlier, mobile phone service was suspended about 87 cities across the country including Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Lahore and Quetta due to security reasons on 9th Muharram.

On the other hand, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah declared 13 districts in Punjab as sensitive, whereas, mobile phone service will remain suspended in Khushab, Mianwali, Bhakkar and Sargodha on 9th and 10th Muharram.

According to reports, the security agencies had informed the federal interior ministry that there was a potential threat that terrorists could target Ashura processions on 9th and 10th Muharram.

On November 12, the Sindh and Balochistan governments had requested the federal interior ministry to suspend mobile phone services for two days.

The government has banned pillion riding during the next two days besides jamming mobile phone services to foil nefarious designs of the anti-state elements and terrorists.

Meanwhile, the law enforcing agencies have been put on high alert to deal with any eventuality.
