ECP suggests new dates for LB polls

Summary SC has also accepted ECP's plea seeking delay in schedule of LB elections.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday proposed fresh dates for holding of local government elections.

In a letter forwarded to SC Registrar, the commission has suggested that local government elections in Punjab should be held on January 30, Sindh 18 January and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in February.

The ECP has also proposed that elections in cantonment boards of all the provinces should be held as per schedule in February.

However, polls will be conducted in Balochistan as per schedule on December 7.

The commission has mentioned that extension in polls’ schedule is needed due to practical and technical difficulties.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court has accepted Election Commission’s plea seeking delay in local bodies polls.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will hear the petition.

In this regard, the apex court has issued notices to the Attorney General‚ Secretary Election Commission and Advocate Generals of Punjab‚ Sindh and Balochistan.
