Karachi, a city of 18 million people, has a long history of violence, much of it associated with criminals, militants, extortionists and gangs linked to the city’s main political parties.
The government launched a wide-ranging crackdown in Karachi about two weeks ago using paramilitary forces, but such operations have failed in the past to provide a lasting solution to the violence.
In March this year, poet and former principal of Liaquatabad College Professor Sibte Jafar was shot dead in Karachi. He too was gunned down by unidentified men riding a motorcycle.
In June, Professor Azfar Rizvi, along with his driver, was gunned down by unknown assailants in the city.
