LAHORE (Online) - Former president Asif Ali Zardari has said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will continue to support democratic forces to strengthen democracy in the country.

Addressing a reception in Lahore on Sunday evening after departure from the Aiwan-e-Sadr (Presidency), Zardari said that he will stand by Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to defeat those forces that wanted to weaken the country.

He said that some forces do not want democracy to get strong in the country but we will work for this cause.

The outgoing President reminded that he strengthened the parliament and empowered the women folk of the country.

”I had set a history by ensuring smooth transition of power from one democratic government to the other,” he mentioned.

Asif Ali Zardari said that he will fully participate in the politics of the country and will remain in contact with the masses.

He told party workers that with the completion of his five year term, democracy had moved forward. “I am certain that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto along with all martyrs of the PPP are looking down on us.”

The outgoing president added that he had accepted the mandate of the present government to ensure that democracy was strengthened.

He further said that it was easy to light a match but difficult to extinguish a fire. “We have formed new traditions and established a new Pakistan. We have strengthened parliament.”

Zardari told party workers that with the completion of his five year tenure his responsibilities now lay with the party. “Now my doors are open for workers,” he said.
