Stopping women voters: PHC stops results of 2 constituencies

Summary Peshawar High Court orders withholding of results in such constituencies, arrest of Jirga members.

 

PESAHAWAR (Dunay News) - Peshawar High Court has taken notice after the reports that in some constituencies of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local Jirgas and Ulema had stopped women from casting their votes.

Taken notice of the reports, PHC Thursday ordered that election results of the constituencies where women were forced to stay away from polling process should not be announced.

Earlier, media reports had said that in certain areas of Mardan and Nowshehra local JIrga members and Ulema had issued decree that women should not take part in voting process.

 

Women were stopped from voting at six polling stations of NA-5 constituency of Nowshera district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Local religious scholars had announced that no woman would be allowed to leave home and cast a vote.

Similarly, women were barred from casting their votes in Payekhel, Chakrala and Kund areas Mianwali s NA-71 constituency.

Election Commission had also said that restricting women from casting their vote is unconstitutional.

The commission vowed to take legal action against the people who stopped women from voting.

ECP directed the presiding officers to prepare women voters’ results separately to ascertain the actual number of female voters.
