JI urges govt to accept Taliban's talks offer

Summary Munawar says talks only way to end terrorism as force has proved a failure in the past.

 

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Ameer Jamat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hassan Monday said Pakistan government must take talks offer by the Taliban.


Talking to media, he said the option of using force has been unsuccessful in the past.


“The only solution to the problem of terrorism is to hold talks with the Taliban.


JI chief said it talks could be held with India, why not with the Taliban who are our own.


Munawar said JI had completed homework ahead of a meeting with Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan.


Earlier, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan on Saturday expressed willingness to hold talks with the government if it constituted a committee of intellectuals and religious leaders of impeccable credibility.


Speaking to a private television channel in Pakistan, Pakistani Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said that the Taliban want Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Jamat-e-Islami chief Syed Munawar Hassan to be made representatives of the government for the talks.


He also demanded the religious leaders issue a fatwa (decree) against killings of Muslims in Syria and Burma.
Terror attacks have taken center stage in the last couple of months since the installation of the new government in Pakistan. As many as 54 terror attacks have taken place across the country in the last 60 days.
