Jail reforms impossible until corruption eliminated: CJP

Summary Says the trial of prisoners should be made speedy in order deliver justice.


ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): Chief Justice Iftikahr Muhammad Chaudhry has said that law and order situation in jail can’t be refined and reformed without elimination of corruption from the infrastructure. 


Three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice conducted hearing of the suo motu notice regarding miserable condition of prisoners in jails.


During hearing of case, Chief Justice remarked that condition of jails cannot be made better unless corruption is rooted out of the system.


The court said that prisoners also have equal rights for protection of life; so provision of equal rights to prisoners is basic responsibility of the state.


Chief Justice directed that capacity of jails should be extended as compared to the number of prisoners.


On the other hand, report regarding miserable condition of prisoners in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa jails also has been submitted in the Supreme Court.


It is worth mentioning that Peshawar jail has capacity to have 850 detainees while establishment has kept more than 1743 prisoners behind bars.


Hearing of aforesaid case has been deferred for three weeks.
