Summary PPP failed to secure a substantive number of seats in the May 11 polls.

 

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Senior leader of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Aitzaz Ahsan has decided to step down from his Senate seat, Dunya News reported.

 

Aitzaz Ahsan forwarded his resignation letter to the PPP leadership today (Tuesday) after his wife Bushra Aitzaz lost elections from NA-124 constituency.

 

Bushra Aitzaz contested elections against Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) candidate Raheel Asghar.

 

While talking to media, Aitzaz Ahsan said results given by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should be reviewed.

 

Similarly, Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo stepped down as PPP’s Punjab President over party’s failure to grab sufficient seats from the province in general elections.

 

Wattoo is likely to make a formal announcement regarding his resignation by evening today. 

 

In the May 11 general elections, Wattoo lost NA-146 (Okara-IV) to Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

 

Wattoo had won from the constituency in 2008 elections as an independent candidate after which he joined the PPP.

 

He was made PPP’s central Punjab president in October 2012. Wattoo also served as federal minister for Kashmir affairs during the 2008-2013 PPP-led coalition government.

 

Also, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Sherry Rehman has resigned from her post.

 

Congratulating the new parliament on its election, Ambassador Rehman forwarded her resignation to Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, saying that it is time a new envoy come in as quickly as possible.

 

Earlier on Monday, Governor Punjab Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood and PPPP’s senior vice president Yousaf Raza Gilani resigned from senior party position over defeat in elections.
