Summary Parliamentary body failed to reach consensus on caretaker PM during its first meeting on Wednesday.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The eight-member parliamentary committee failed to reach a consensus on the nomination of caretaker prime minister during its first meeting on Wednesday.
Ghulam Ahmed Bilour was elected as the committee’s chairman during the first day of the meeting while a representative from the opposition would be elected as chairman when the committee will meet today. The rules of the committee were also discussed during the first meeting according to which presence of five members in necessary for holding of committee’s meeting.
The names of Dr Ishrat Husain and Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid will be discussed for caretaker PM during today’s meeting.
Talking to media after the meeting Farooq Naek said that new nominees could not be considered now by the committee as per the constitution.
The parliamentary committee is bound to nominate the care taker prime minister till March 22, failing which the matter would automatically go to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The PPP had initially proposed the names of former Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, former State Bank Governor, Dr. Ishrat Husain, and a retired judge of the Supreme Court Mir Hazar Khan Khoso for the position.
The PML-N had proposed the names of former top court judges Nasir Aslam Zahid, Shakirullah Jan and a senior nationalist political leader Rasul Bakhsh Palijo.
Both parties later withdrew one name each from their lists.
The government has finalized the names of Dr Ishrat Husain and Justice (retd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, while the PML-N has finalized the names of Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid and Rasool Bux Palijo for the post of caretaker prime minister.
Under the constitution, the parliamentary committee has to evolve a consensus on one name for the caretaker prime minister till March 22 and if it fails, then the matter will go to the Election Commission to finalize one name out of four, who have been proposed by the PPP and the PML-N.
The parliamentary committee comprises Former MNA Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah‚ Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour‚ Senator Farooq H. Naek‚ Senator Ch. Shujaat Hussain‚ Former MNA Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan‚ Senator Pervaiz Rasheed‚ Former MNA Khawaja Saad Rafiq and Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan.
