ISLAMABAD: A meeting of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) headed by Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim was held here on Wednesday.

The meeting reviewed various issues relating government’s application for lifting ban on public sector appointments, ineligibility of parliamentarians and implementation of article 62 and 63 of the constitution.

The meeting also discussed verification of voter lists, progress on delimitation of constituencies in Karachi and various issues regarding electoral candidates and parliamentarians.

During the meeting Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim was informed that 70 per cent of parliamentarians had not paid their taxes for 2011 in a letter from federal tax ombudsman secretary Dr Nazir Saeed.

The letter which had earlier been sent to the election commission recommended that the ECP should declare the submission of tax details mandatory for candidates seeking to contest elections, along with their nomination papers.

The meeting also considered few amendments in filing nomination papers while allotment of electoral symbols to political parties would also be fixed in the meeting.

Moreover, the commission is scheduled to meet representatives of opposition parties on Thursday to discuss concerns raised by them in a charter of demands.

The parties, led by the PML-N had held a token sit-in and a march to express solidarity with the commission and to press their demands, including resignation of governors and transfer of all high-level officers in the federal and provincial government as soon as the caretaker set-up was put in place.
