Indian SC permits Dr Khalil Chisti to visit Pakistan

Summary Dr Chisti will have to deposit his passport to the Indian consulate in Karachi upon his arrival.

The Indian Supreme Court on Thursday allowed Eighty-two year old Pakistani microbiologist Mohammed Khalil Chishti to go to Pakistan temporarily after depositing Rs. 5 lakh in the registry of the apex court.The court said that Dr Chisti will have to deposit his passport to the Indian consulate in Karachi upon his arrival in Pakistan. Mohammed Khalil Chishti, facing life imprisonment in a 20-year-old murder case in Ajmer, will return back to India on November 1.Dr Chishti is a virologist holding a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and has worked in different parts of the world.While visiting his mother in 1992, the Karachi-based microbiologist was present at his brother’s house in Rajasthan’s Ajmer city when an altercation, motivated by a family feud, occurred.A local man was killed in the quarrel and, according to the family, Chishti was falsely implicated in the case because of being a Pakistani.
