Efforts of the security forces to sweep criminal elements from Lyari area of Karachi have faded amid strong resistance by heavily armed gang members as ‘Grand Operation’ entered fifth day.Police continued to face resistance on Tuesday, as heavily armed criminals continued with rocket and grenade attacks in the Nawa Lane and Cheel Chowk areas.According to details, a policeman identified as Tufail was killed during clashes near Cheel Chowk and so far nine rocket attacks have been reported in the areas.DIG South Commander Shaukat while talking to media said, timeframe of end of Lyari operation could not be announced until situation is brought under control.Different areas of Lyari, including Nawa Lane, Kalakot, Ghareeb Shah Road and Juman Shah have been deprived of electricity and water since the past four days.Mobile phone jammers have also been installed in the Lyari area.Hundreds of families from affected areas – including Agra Taj Colony, Afshani Gali, Shah Abdul Latif Road, Ghas Mandi, Gul Mohammad Lane, Aath Chowk, Cheel Chowk, and other parts of Lyari – were reported to have relocated to safer parts of the city the previous day.Karachi has long suffered outbreaks of violence, either carried out by the terrorists, criminal elements or because of turf wars between rival political groups.
