Summary PM Gilani says there should be no political wing in the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
Talking to the media, the PM said no political wing in the ISI can be acceptable. He said that no one but the court removed the name of Hussain Haqqani from the Exit Control List. “This is a wrong perception that we helped Haqqani flee the country,” he added. The prime minister also termed as successful the visit of President Zardari to India. The PM had earlier created quite a stir when he had said on the floor of the parliament that he would not allow a state within state. The statement was taken by analysts as a reference to the military’s interference in politics. However, the PM later gave several statements that were meant for damage control because at one point in time it seemed that the military-government relationship had got to a point of no return. The timing of PM Gilani’s fresh statement is quite significant as the President is returning from a private visit to India. The Indian government claims that President Zardari and PM Manmohan Singh discussed Kashmir and presence of militant groups on Pakistani soil, a charge that previous Pakistani governments had been vehemently denying.President Zardari was on way back from the India visit when the PM made the statement. On the other hand, the Pakistan Army is dealing with a major disaster caused by an avalanche in Siachen. Over a hundred soldiers are trapped in the highest battleground. COAS Gen Kayani paid a visit Sunday to Gayari sector to review rescue operation.
