Summary US has repeated allegations against Hafiz Saeed and cited availability of intelligence.
In State Department briefing, deputy spokesperson Mark Toner however said he was not sure if Hafiz Saeed had been indicted in any US court. He said the US wants to see him brought to justice as “he is hiding in plain sight”.Toner also said allegations against Hafiz Saeed were based “on our conviction, he is guilty of terrorist attacks in India and Afghanistan and our belief is based on intelligence.” At no point did Tonet mention availability of hard evidence that is required to convict anyone in a court of law.“Our rewards offer is real and we are not playing any strategic games with Pakistan,” he said. “We are also in close contact with Indian government on this issue.”Toner also claimed there was no connection between visits of US officials to India and Pakistan and this bounty offer for Hafiz Saeed. “President Zardaris visit to India is constructive, and we are all for it because it’s a win-win situation for everybody.”Toner added: “We support the dialogue between India and Pakistan but are not playing any role as such to bring both together.”Deputy Secretary Nides has had a productive visit to Pakistan, and “we are waiting for the end of parliamentary review to move forward.”“We value our relations with Pakistan and want a resolution on issue as we dont want it to be affected by events in the recent past,” he added.
