India: Entertainment tax to be reduced, says minister

Indias Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Thursday said that the entertainment tax would be reduced after it comes under the common umbrella of Goods and Services Tax.Soni was speaking to mediapersons on the second day of the 42nd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji, Goa.She said that entertainment taxes vary in different states and the reduction would help upcoming filmmakers in lowering the production budget and hence help in the growth of the industry.Meanwhile, Bollywood actor Abhay Deol was also spotted at the event signing autographs and interacting with debut filmmakers and fans.He told mediapersons about the objective and benefit of the film festival.Film buffs gathered in Indias western coastal Goa state as curtains went up on IFFI amidst festivities, glitz and joyous mood anticipating good cinema on Wednesday.India has been looking forward to building a film festival on the lines of Cannes and has turned to tourist hub Goa to provide a picturesque backdrop for the celebration of cinema.However the festival has been criticised in the past for ignoring regional language films from across the country.
