Critically acclaimed actress-turned-director Nandita Das has been conferred with the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, one of the highest civilian awards of France, for her contribution to the development of Indo-French cooperation in cinema.The actress, known for her performances in films like ‘Fire’, ‘Earth’ and ‘Bawander’, Friday received the award from French Ambassdor Jerome Bonnafont.The award is given to writers, filmmakers, musicians and other artists and persons who have distinguished themselves in the field of art, culture and literature or for their contribution to the influence of arts in France and throughout the world. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, famous photographer Goraey and author Upamanyu Chatterjee are among previous Indian recipients of the award instituted by France in May 1957.
