Summary
Following the enormous success of the series Planet Earth, BBC Earth has come up with a groundbreaking documentary series called Life, which illustrates the extraordinary tactics animals and plants use to stay alive. Executive Producer, Michael Gunton says that one of the most important considerations in a nature series is to show viewers images that they've never seen before. Filmed over 3,000 days, the programme humanizes the stories and struggles of the animal and plant world. The Life crew at times used cameras that film at 2,000 frames per second, more than 50 times faster than regular video shooting speeds. This enabled the producers to capture animal movements that would otherwise be too fast to show. One of the sequences was filmed off the Florida Keys and it involves dolphins and the ingenious fishing technique they've devised. According to Gunton, only dolphins in this area have come up with this method. One dolphin creates a ring of mud by stirring up the seabed with its tail. The mullet are trapped in the cloudy ring and jump into the air to escape, into the dolphins' mouths. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is threatening all aspects of wildlife, including these dolphins. Gunton says because dolphins are so intelligent, they may find ways to escape any danger from the hazardous oil. The series, Life will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in North America on June 1st.
