(Dunya News) – The notification by the University of Sindh Jamshoro calling for putting up signboards across the campus in English and Sindhi has stirred a controversy, in what is being termed a ‘conspiracy’ against the national language Urdu.

The notification received much attention following media reports that criticised the varsity for ordering signboards only in English and Sindhi languages, while completely ignoring Urdu.

Following the hype created in the media over the issue, the Vice Chancellor of the university issued a statement. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat stated that the university could not imagine ignoring the national language – Urdu, adding that media reports were all part of a propaganda.

“There was a little misunderstanding,” he said adding that the signboards in English were already in Urdu, and hence the special mention of Urdu language in the notification was not felt. Dr. Burfat said that another amended notification had also been issued.

The controversy also angered many politicians in Sindh including Khawaja Izharul Hassan who called for Dr. Burfat’s resignation.

“Whoever opposes the Urdu language is an enemy of Pakistan, an enemy of Quaid e Azam,” he said.

Mustafa Kamal called for an inquiry into the matter saying that the issue appeared to be a conspiracy to fuel riots.

The Supreme Court has already issued orders regarding the use of Urdu as the official language. In the wake of such orders, the recent notification has come nothing short of a surprise.
