Summary Punjab govt has decided to take action against schools with pass-percentage below 20 percent.
According to the Sources all the head masters and head mistresses of the schools with 20 percent pass-percentage would be removed from their posts.Heads of those schools with ten percent successful students will be dismissed and they will never be appointed on any administrative post in future.The ministry of education has also asked the Executive District Officers of all the districts of Punjab to present report about the matter.On the other hand, SES Teachers’ Association has condemned the decision of ministry of education and has requested the government to return the decision.Office conveyers of the teachers’ association hold the stance that the government should provide necessary facilities to all the schools; only then it will get the right to anticipate good performance from the public schools.Government of Punjab has established a separate Department for Literacy & Non-Formal Basic Education aiming at to address the problem of dropouts at the primary level and meet the emerging demand for Non-Formal Basic Education with functional Literacy and livelihood skills.In collaboration with international agencies like UNESCO & JICA, Literacy and NFBE Department has developed various Projects i.e. Literacy Program (32 Districts), Campaign for Enhancement of Literacy (04 Districts), Community Learning Centres (Sahiwal Division), Punjab Literacy & Livelihood Program (Multan & DG Khan Division) and Brick kilns Project (Multan & Khanewal Districts) to fight the threat of illiteracy and achieve the goal of 100% literacy by 2020.Pakistans literacy rate is 57%. Punjab has highest number of population with 91 million people.Punjabs literacy rate is 60% slightly higher than national statistics but with highest number of illiterates that is above 38 million people.After 18th amendment, its the role of provinces to achieve 100% literacy targets. In 2002, Literacy & Non Formal Basic Education Department established in Punjab province to achieve the goal of 100% literacy rate of Punjab by the year 2020. Department is working with low budgetary allocation with only 0.5% of educational budget and very lean management structure.
