Summary Chairman HEC Dr Javaid Laghari says most of universities will become bankrupt soon.
He expressed these views while delivering a detailed presentation during the meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Professional and Technical Training that was met under the Chairmanship of Member National Assembly (MNA) Sheikh Rohail Asghar.The Chairman HEC stated that HEC has not received any fund from Ministry of Finance for the last four months.He stated that Peshawar University, two universities of the Punjab province and one university of Sindh province are getting loan from banks, in order to pay the salaries to the teachers and other staff.The Chairman HEC briefed the committee on the achievements regarding Higher Education and Performance of HEC.He informed the committee that the number of universities increased in Pakistan from 98 to 139 in the last nine years.He further informed that Pak-Universities have produced more PhDs in last 9 years (3280) since the establishment of HEC.The HEC revolutionized the Higher Education in Pakistan and it has been recognized internationally for the transformation it has produced in Pakistani Universities, he added.The Committee deferred the Higher Education Commission (Amendment Bill, 2012) due to issuance of a stay order from Sindh High Court regarding the notification by the Government to place Higher Education Commission under the Ministry of Professional and Technical Training.The Chairperson, Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education also participated in the meeting and briefed the Committee over the achievements, organizational structure of the Governing Board and future planning of the Board in detail.
