(Dunya News) - As year 2017 breathes its last, a review into Karachi’s law and order situation depicts an improved, but also an inauspicious, picture.
As per official statistics, 392 Karachiites lost their lives in various instances of firing, assault and inter-party feuds during 2017. A monthly breakdown of these killings is presented below:
The fact that Karachi has witnessed a sharp decline in number of people killed over last two years can be corroborated by the following illustration:
Police officials are of the view that the discernable improvement in law and order situation owes to the ongoing operation in Karachi against criminals, led by police and rangers.
Karachi could not get rid of the menacing phenomenon that is extortion either. During 2017, police registered 64 extortion cases as against 103 in 2016.
As for ransom kidnappings, only 13 such cases were registered in this year. 2016, on the other hand, witnessed 21 ransom cases being registered.
