KARACHI (Dunya News) - Sprawling metropolis has witnessed an alarming hike in street crime incidents in the first week of 2017 causing anxiety among locals, said senior anchorperson and analyst Kamran Khan in his renowned show Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Sath.

Last week, during gathering of Sindh Apex Committee, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed grave concern over sudden rise in street crimes and directed Sindh IG to take immediate measures to curb soaring crime rate but all went in vain.

Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) has identified 60 ‘hotspots’ in metropolis where menace of street crimes have ascended alarmingly, said Kamran Khan.

CPLC has directed locals to remain highly-watchful in Disco Bakery (Gulshan-e-Iqbal), Aladin Park, Continental Bakery (Gulshan-e-Iqbal), Dolmen Mall, Millennium Mall, Baloch Colony Bridge, Iqra University, Noorani Kabab House intersection, NIPA and Ambala Bakery as street criminals are quite aware of vulnerable spots in said areas.

When investigation was further magnified, stats revealed that a policeman, two women and thirteen locals fell prey to target killing incidents.

On January 10, a trader was gunned down over non-payment of extortion in Mehmoodabad, a citizen was deprived of his valuables in same area when he was withdrawing money from an ATM machine and famous singer Arshad Mehmood was robbed along with his family.

Culprits are still at large despite emergence of CCTV footages of several incidents.

Details revealed an overall of 1197 street crime incidents in which 40 citizens were deprived of their cars, 511 bikes were stolen and 503 mobile phones were snatched. These crimes were notified in first week of 2017.

Being disappointed with police’ performance citizens are forced to take safety measures by themselves.
