MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Mexican authorities have arrested a top operator of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel implicated in three separate attacks that killed 20 troops and police, officials said Wednesday.

Yhovany Castro Urbano, 27, was detained on Tuesday by soldiers and federal police in Ameca, a town in the western state of Jalisco, said National Security Commissioner Renato Sales.

Castro Urbano was identified as an "operator" for Nemesio Oseguera, alias "El Mencho," the leader of the New Generation gang, Sales said.

Sales said Castro Urbano is linked to an ambush in April that left 15 Jalisco state police officers dead, as well as a May 2014 attack that killed four troops and a September 2014 strike that killed one soldier.

Shots were exchanged during his arrest, but nobody was hurt. Three of his associates were detained.

The New Generation drug cartel emerged in 2010 but only rose to prominence in the past year following the assaults on security forces.
