SOFIA (AP) - An Australian man serving a 20-year sentence for a murder committed in Bulgaria has been denied a request to serve the remainder of his sentence in his home country.
In reaching its decision, Bulgaria s prosecutor s office said Tuesday that 26-year-old Paul "Jock" Palfreeman has repeatedly "committed gross violations" of prison regulations, has served insufficient time in custody, and for these reasons "the transfer has been rejected."
Plafreeman was convicted and sentenced in 2009 for fatally stabbing one man and wounding another during a street brawl in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, two years earlier.
He insisted he acted in self-defense after intervening to prevent an attack on a group of Roma, or Gypsies.
The request for him to be returned to Australia was made by its prosecutor general.
