MADRID (AP) - Officials say police have busted a heavily armed gang that allegedly committed a number of violent robberies, including raiding a shopping mall on the Spanish resort island of Mallorca three times using tactics normally employed by the military.

Among five people arrested are a British citizen who is described in an Interior Ministry statement as "an expert in weapons and military tactics who had belonged to the special forces of the United Kingdom" and two former members of Spain s military.

The robberies were planned using information provided by a security guard who worked at the mall and who is now also under arrest, Sunday s statement said.

The suspects allegedly began their spree in May 2009 when they stole a truck from a military base and rammed it into the mall.
