TOKYO (AP) - Japanese prosecutors say an American man accused of killing an Irish exchange student in Tokyo has shown no remorse and should be punished severely.

As his trial began Monday, 19-year-old Richard Hinds of Memphis, Tennessee, denied intentionally suffocating Nicola Furlong last May. He acknowledged he and Furlong, 21, were in a hotel and he "lightly pressed her neck" while the two had sex. The defense suggested she died of an overdose of alcohol and drugs.

Furlong came to Tokyo with a friend to see a concert and met Hinds and his friend, James Blackston, the night she died. The four were drinking before they went to a hotel. Blackston faces charges of sexually assaulting Furlong's friend in a separate room.

Hinds has been charged with murder.
