CHITTAGONG (AFP) – Sri Lankan spinners removed openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes after Bangladesh made a promising start in the first of the two-Test series in Chittagong on Wednesday.

Bangladesh reached 120 for two at lunch on day one as Tamim made 52 off 53 balls and shared a 72-run opening stand with Kayes, who scored 40, after the hosts elected to bat.

Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera bowled Tamim with a beautiful delivery that pitched outside the off-stump and spun sharply to beat the batsmen before clipping the bails.

Tamim struck six fours and a sweetly-timed six off Perera over long-on in his 25th Test fifty.

Left-arm chinaman Lakshan Sandakan trapped Kayes leg-before at the stroke of lunch, ending the left-handed batsman’s 75-ball stay.

Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 26 when lunch was taken at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Bangladesh, who are without injured all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, handed left-arm spinner Sunzumul Islam his Test debut but left out veteran Abdur Razzak, who was recalled to the squad after four years.
