MELBOURNE (AFP) - Skipper Steve Smith declared Australia s first innings at 624 for eight to lead Pakistan by 181 runs on the final day of the second Melbourne Test on Friday.

Smith was unbeaten on 165 with Mitchell Starc hitting 84 off 91 balls to set up the declaration.

The declaration came 18 minutes before lunch to give the Australians a minimum of 70 overs to achieve a result in the rain-disrupted Test.

Starc hammered seven sixes, the most in an innings of a Melbourne Test, and was particularly severe on Yasir Shah, clubbing the leg-spinner for five sixes.

Shah finished with figures of three for 207 off 41 overs.
